1. In Europe, an art establishment evolved that codified rules for the production of art and rewarded artists whose work fell within the rules with a showing of their work at the annual "Salon." Adolphe-William Bouguereau serves as an example of the style of the French and British Royal Art academies. 2. The development of photography had a major impact on the style and content of impressionist and post-impressionist painting. 3. Impressionism developed during the last half of the 19th century. It was a style created by anti-establishment artists that revolutionized the way the world looked at art and artists. 4. Impressionist artists claimed to be attempting to capture the "transitory" effects of light and color... a far cry from classical ideal form. 5. For the first time, artists didn't have to rely on the support of the wealthy aristocracy to make a living. 6. Many of the original Impressionist artists, such as Cézanne, Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Renior, Manet, Degas and others sought more solid form and more individual expression and became known as Post-impressionists. 7. It was from these artists that many in the movements we have come to know as "Modern Art" drew their inspiration.
