1. Art in the Americas, prior to the arrival of Europeans in 1492, is known as pre-Colombian. 2. Throughout the great native cultures of central and south America (Aztec, Mayan, Incan, etc.) symbolism is favored over representation. 3. The earliest professional artists in colonial America were known as Limners (or drawers.) 4. Many American artists who gained prominence during the American Revolutionary Period had been trained in Europe and owed much to the French and English Academies for their style and technique. 5. The first group, after the revolution, to use the American landscape as subject matter was the Hudson River School. 6. During the Civil War, some of the most important images to be created in America were the photographs of Matthew Brady. 7. After the Mexican War, the Civil War and the conquering of Native Americans, American artists moved west to paint the conquered lands. The most influential group was known as the Rocky Mountain School. 8. Artists who painted in more settled areas and who chronicled the life of the American people were known as American Genre Painters. 9. European Modernism came to America in the Armory Show.
