Middle Ages Critical Thinking

For many centuries following the end of Roman central authority, society was in disarray. The world of the ancient Roman, which was populated with thousands of gods and religious cults (including Christianity), was balanced by the central power of the Roman government. As a counter balance to the political and social anarchy of the Middle Ages, a strong centralized Christian church and a strong monotheistic theology evolved.

How did the lack of a unifying central government and the strong Christian church influence art during the Middle Ages? How have the relationships between government and religion influenced art in the modern world?
