Middle Ages Critical Thinking

For many centuries following the end of Roman central authority, society was in disarray . The world of the ancient Roman, which was populated with thousands of gods and religious cults (including Christianity), was balanced by the central power of the Roman government. As a counter balance to the political and social anarchy of the Middle Ages, a strong centralized Christian church and a strong monotheistic theology evolved.

How did the lack of a unifying central government and the strong Christian church influence art during the Middle Ages? How have the relationships between government and religion influenced art in the modern world?
